Erasure damn it!!

Sun Nov 8, 2009, 8:11 PM

I'm generally fairly computer literate which is and has been a good
thing given the amount of time I spend on a computer. It's also a good
thing given the number of viruses, trojans, worms and the like that lurk
in the wings waiting for opportunity to infect the home PC.

A couple of weeks ago my PC was bitten by a nasty bug. The H1N1 of
computer viruses. Damned thing kicked my butt! I spent 5 days researching, deleting, wrestling with files that didn't belong and finally admitted defeat. I saved what I could (thank goodness for external hard drives) and reformatted.

I did lose a few things, and in the long run I suppose it's good to have cleaned up and started from scratch however...reinstalling everything I HAD
on this machine has been a daunting task. I never realized just how many
software programs and plugins I had amassed. I've been reloading for two weeks and STILL not quite done.

I certainly don't want to go through this again any time soon!

In the meantime...patience folks I'll get to you all :)

Excuse Me While I

Tue Oct 6, 2009, 8:10 PM

PITCH A FIT!!!!!!

(And I apologise in advance for being a bitch)

But at this point I'm freakin' pissed!!!

:shakefist:

Here I am peacefully browsing my way through the DA stock section and what should I see but my second set of Grasslands brushes (preview image MINUS all the blatant copyright marks on it) posted on THIS twit's page :iconlinker123:

How big of an idiot do you have to be to take a set of popular brushes, post them on a HUGE art community website and expect that NO ONE will recognize them????

He apparently downloaded them from the ever popular, uber-sleazy "Rapid Share". They have been informed in no uncertain terms to remove them. However they were uploaded there from someone who got them from....not surprsingly Photoshop-land.RU

This delightfully scummy little cyber cesspool masquerading as a legitimate Photoshop resource website is offering several of my sets for download. And guess what?

They've removed MY README.text, AND removed the copyright brush that I include at the beginning and end of each of my brush sets. I've since torn them a new a#$hole as well!

I'm left at this point with a couple of options.

1. I take all my sets down.

2. Stop making brushes.

3. Send legal documents to every website offering my brushes without my permission

OR

4. Henceforth on every single brush in the set, slap my copyright into the brush and stop including the image files in the pack. I know this would be annoying as hell for the brush user (but anyone who uses photoshop will know how to erase the unwanted portion. That way every time a brush was used, my info would be immediately visible. I'd also make the image pack available for people who directly contact me for download.

I'm not crazy about any of those options, but I'm also livid beyond belief.

Is it not enough that I spend large amounts of time, effort, creativity and energy making them and offering them for free??????

Do I have to be a colossal bitch and publicly state that if I learn of or catch anyone distrubting or using the brushes personally or commercially WITHOUT FOLLOWING MY TERMS OF USE....I will sue their stupid asses off until their grandchildrens grandchildren are destitute and starving??????? :threaten:

#(*^&%(*#(&@#*#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

End of rant.

Time, 3 V's and a D80

Sat Oct 3, 2009, 1:20 AM

How is it that time seems to pass by so quickly?  One day it's warm and sunny and I'm planning my holidays and the next time I look up it's cold, the leaves are turning and it's October. Life really needs to slow down just a little.

3 V's

Vacation...At long last, a much needed break...however...2 weeks is not nearly enough! *lol*

Victoria...Where I spent my vacation and I was so happy to go back. Two years was too long to wait. Loads of pics of course which I will be uploading eventually.

Vehicular Mishaps... My 2nd day in Victoria, my niece is driving me to Mount Doug and we get creamed right in the middle of an intersection. She was fine, though quite shaken, the van was totaled and me... well, I broke a tooth and needed to visit the dentist for a root canal and crown (not a fun thing to do on vacation). My knees and shins took a beating, the most amazing shades of black, blue and purple for the next few weeks. Given that I only had two weeks there, I didn't let the ordeal stop me, I just hiked at a considerably slower pace than usual

On the plus side...ICBC took pity on my poor treatment and abuse by Victoria drivers and paid for the dental work and a little extra compensation for pain and suffering.

Consequently the vacation was paid for and I FINALLY purchased my long lusted after
Nikon D80! It came with an 18-55mm VR lens, a 55-200mm VR lens, tripod, remote, camera bags, lens hoods, close-up lenses, filters, 3 batteries and 2 16 gig
memory cards.

Expect LOTS of wonderful new stocks and photos folks! :D

Thanks to everyone for all the favs and adds. As always they're much appreciated.

Well...back to the long list of notes to answer, faving all the wonderful artwork that I've missed. Have a great weekend everyone! See you soon!

Up and down...up and down...

Well, at least it's interesting :D

Down - Still at the same job
Up - The atmosphere has greatly improved

Down - Summer has been exceptionally cool and rainy
Up- It's not snowing and 40 below!

Down - Have had to put my Nikon D90 on hold for a little while
Up - My old Sony Cybershot still works :D

Down - My house is in a state of renovation chaos
Up - I'll have a shiny new kitchen and bathroom within the next week or two

Down - Due to the said state of chaos, it's been next to impossible to get time online
Down - Due to lack of time online I'm woefully behind on notes and messages

Up - Once I do get back online I'm going to have tons of photos and the like to upload
(Which will put me woefully behind again ...an Up and Down all in one  )

UP UP UP - August 21 I start two weeks of holidays and I'm off to Victoria again! :excited:

Hope everyone's been having a great summer! Thanks as always for all your favs and wonderful comments. I will get to all of you individually though granted, it will take a little time. Keep well and be happy everyone!

Really? It's mid May and our overnight low tonight will be -3 (-10 with the wind chill) with snow flurries. In the middle of May??? Did someone pick me up and move me to Alaska when I wasn't looking? Global warming? I think it's shifting as opposed to warming. Over the last few years it seems to me that every season is running 4 to 5 weeks behind. If this keeps up, eventually  I'll be knee deep in snow in July and celebrating Christmas during a heat wave

Well, it's been a wee while since I've had time to hang out at DA. SO much to catch up on! :D

Work has finally slowed to a more manageable pace, curling season has ended and tax time has come and gone so I'll finally be able to spend some time doing the things I enjoy doing. :)

Speaking of taxes, mine have netted me a return this year which means that sweet Nikon D90 I've had my eye on is finally within reach! As soon as it's in my hot little hands, expect a deluge of photos and stock

In the meantime...I'm off to answer the plethora of notes and messages that have gotten backlogged.

See ya soon!!!

I can NOT believe the colossal ignorance of some people and more than that, the unbelievable STUPIDITY!!!!!

Here I am, happily browsing DA and what do I run across but this....
rian-1411.deviantart.com/art/B…. (the link doesn't work anymore since DA took it down) Upon closer inspection I realize that these are EXACTLY my Grasslands brushes! midnightstouch.deviantart.com/…

Not only does :iconrian-1411: have the unmitigated gall to indicate on the preview image that the brushes are ©al-ramady.com|king of love, he has the unbelievable stupidity to post them here on DA!!!

I'm LIVID!!!

Since his website al-ramady.com is in Arabic, I don't understand what else he might be claiming there. I can only assume given how clear a violation of copyright this incident is...that this isn't the only thing he's claiming as his own.

King of Love is what he calls himself. Pretty obviously KING OF THIEVES as far as I'm concerned!!!!

Its been a while where should we begin...feels like forever

It seems that my entire life has been smothered by work the last few months and I feel out of touch with every one and every thing. Myself included. The job is extremely fast paced and hectic and though they keep assuring me that things will slow down by the end of March I'm not entirely sure I believe them. I'm not even entirely sure I'll last that long

I'm incredibly back logged on notes comments and favs and doing my best to catch up. I'll get to you I promise. I do have a couple of new brush sets in the work and will hopefully finish them off and post them soon.

I was wishing there was a way to clone myself so I could get to everything, but after some consideration realized that wouldn't be a good idea even if it were possible. She'd of course hate me because I'd foist all the unpleasant and tedious tasks on her. Resentment would build up...a huge fight would ensue and I'd be forced to do something desperate like pushing her off a tall building naked. Then I'd be guilty of murder...or at very least guilty of making an obscene clone fall :giggle:

Hope everyone's well and good!

Take care! :D

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

My goodness it's been a long while since I've had time to visit DA and catch up with all your notes, messages and wonderful artwork. I've missed everyone! :)

I've been ridiculously overwhelmed by work, and add to that the getting ready for Christmas panic...suffice it to say that I've barely had time to breathe the last two months.

I hope everyone had a happy and joy-filled Christmas.

It was a peaceful and heartwarming one here. I got a very special gift that still has me emotional. My siblings and I don't exchange gifts any longer, since we all grew up and had families. So my sister had me a bit taken aback when she sat down beside me and handed me a gift yesterday. I looked at her, very puzzled and she said..."you'll understand when you open it".  I unwrapped the package to find a box with a small can in it. Through the clear top, I could see water inside covering a oyster. The etched card that came with it said that in the oyster, was a Love Pearl. I looked at her and started to cry. There is a reason that this is significant.

My father, who is no longer with us...was the heart of Christmas in our family. He loved to shop and always found each of us the most unique and imaginative gifts. He delighted in delighting his children.
When I was 16, I was unwrapping the gifts from my stocking, and the last one I opened was a can, filled with water and an oyster. After Christmas, he and I opened the oyster, took out the pearl. It was then set in a pearl cage and I wore it as a necklace for many years. A couple of years ago while wearing it...I looked down, and realized that the pearl was missing. It had slipped out unnoticed and I was devastated. That loss, has been a source of sorrow for me ever since.

It seems that my sister is now the heart of Christmas in my family :)

Well....now that I have a few peaceful days to myself between now and New Year, I can finally get caught up on notes, take a good long browse and add to my list of favs. Who knows...maybe I can even get a new manip done myself.

Enjoy the rest of the holidays all, and may the New Year bring each of you peace, prosperity and happiness! :)

No, this is not a hormonally based mood swing :giggle: Just some circumstance based conflict of emotions.

The sad, well summer is waning and that always makes me sad. Shorter days, longer nights, not to mention the impending cold. Along with the waning of summer, so ends my lengthy and mostly enjoyable flirtation with unemployment and school.

Happy, Monday I start a new job. I'll be a production assistant at Mondetta.

Sad, it's not quite the job I wanted with less opportunity for advancement than I'd hoped.

Happy, it is a pay increase with a good benefits package, and now I can go back to keeping the bills more comfortably at bay and finally get the new camera I've been pining away for :D

See, it makes perfect sense

I imagine it's going to take a couple of weeks to get back into the swing of things. Going to bed earlier, getting out of bed earlier, time management and structure. Why oh why couldn't I just win the lottery instead!

Enjoy the fall weather everyone, and wish me luck! :D

Just a quick hit and run to possibly prevent a few of you from acquiring a Mircrosoft headache.

For those of you running Windows XP on an AMD system, or using an HP computer.....If you're planning on installing the Windows Update Service Pack 3......DON'T!!!!

At least not until doing some serious research, or picking up a patch at HP's website.

Early this evening, I regrettably installed the Microsoft automatic update. Silly me!! Of course, I then had to reboot. The computer started to boot, apologized for not being able to boot properly because there was a hardware or software problem, and asked if I wanted to boot into safe mode, which I chose to do. Boot to safe mode started, promptly stopped, and rebooted it self again...and then went through the same scenario over and over again ad nauseam!

Thankfully, after a major panic attack, visions of a hefty computer tech bill (thank you Microsoft)and a hissy fit I got on my daughters computer and went in search of answers.

Not being intimidated by computers has it's advantages, because after a couple of hours, some research, a crash course on the Windows Recovery Console and command prompt I finally managed to get my machine up and running again.

Now you'd THINK that Microsoft would send out and advisory of some sort with the update warning those of us with AMDs or Hewlett Packard machines. Too busy counting the mountains of cash coming in for supplying the world with unstable and substandard operating systems.

Anyways, I just wanted to give a heads up and maybe save a few people from some problems.

Have a great weekend everyone.

I'm off to make sure Microsoft didn't cause any other problems on my machine.

Freedom for a couple of weeks anyway :D

Yay! After 8 months (oddly enough, it felt longer, yet I'm surprised it's gone by already) I'm DONE SCHOOL!!!
And I'm very happy to say that I managed to get through 27 courses, and graduated with an average of 97% :winner:

Now...at long last, I can kick back, relax, cruise around in my muscle car, do some fishing, a little sight seeing, snap a few pics, do some manips, maybe a set of brushes or two and answer a million notes and comments. Come to think of it, I may need more than just a couple of weeks :evillaugh:

Wow! I just noticed that I've also passed the milestone of 50,000 page views. That's so awesome! I've made so many wonderful and supportive friends here. I'd like to thank all of you for your kindnesses and encouragement! Your patience too. I've been less than timely in responding, and I promise I'll get back to everyone as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer.
I certainly intend to...at least until I have to get to the nasty business of finding a job again :D

Take care everyone!

Wow, I really don't remember school being this time consuming the first time around. I've seriously spent the last two weeks having nightmares about credits, debits, ledgers, balances and possessed calculators  Bookkeeping is NOT my thing. I suppose all the stressing and focus paid off though since I managed to pass my exam with 96%.

On the up side, I've gone through 7 months, 24 courses and maintained an average of 97%. Six weeks left, 3 books to go!

On the down side, I guess this means I'm going to have to join the workaday world again. :cries: Unless of course I manage to snag a winning lotto ticket :D

In the meantime, I apologize for the delay in response to all the comments and notes, and for all the fav and runs I'm about to do. Sorry, just not enough hours to comment on everything (unless someone is willing to take on a very low paying job as my assistant :giggle: )

Thanks for all your patience and support!

There's a story behind this of course :)   I haven't had my own car for nearly 10 years now. Mine (a gorgeous 1981 Grand Prix) had been totaled in an accident back then, and going through a divorce,  financial devastation and trying to provide for my son and daughter, well suffice it to say that my budget just didn't allow for even the smallest luxury.

The years went by and with patience and perseverance I raised my kids, kept our home, and in the last 3 years finally got my head above water. Missing not having a car and the freedom it afforded me, but happy and getting by using my son's truck when needed.

Well, today my son came home from work, called me outside and handed me the keys to a gorgeous, fully loaded, black 1987 Grand Prix.

Why?  "because of everything you done for me Mom, you're the best,
and I love you more than anyone"

Did I cry? HELL YES!!  Because of the gift of the car?  Oh sure,  a little. But mostly because of the words. Because, despite the hardships, the struggles and sacrifices, it's all been worth it. Just to hear those words and to know that the things I've done are appreciated.  That's the best gift ever!

It's SO wonderful to finally see the snow melting, and feel the warmth of sunshine on my face again!!! :D   It's been a long and bitterly cold winter here. I won't complain too much though. The cold has been easier to deal with than some of the other extreme weather that's plagued many parts of the continent. Here's hoping Mother Nature mellows on the mood swings just a little.

I'm half way through my course with an average of 97%. With only 8 books left, I think it's a pretty safe bet that I'll graduate with honors. That's a far cry from my average leaving high school

Once I'm done in July, I'm hoping to be able to take a two week vacation before getting down to the business of landing a fabulous job.  With that in mind, I'm squirreling away all my pennies so I can buy the Nikon D80 I've been eyeing lasciviously :D Pictures and stock photos galore!

Hope everyone has a Happy Easter, and enjoyable spring break!!

BTW....as a point of interest....  I was browsing through DA checking out some of the amazing stock tonight and ran across a fantastic photo that caught my eye and imagination. So....I suggested it as a Daily Deviation.

It really does lend itself to some wonderful possibilities.

First and foremost, I hope everyone enjoyed a happy holiday season!  I know I'm a little late in expressing this, but I'm hoping that the New Year brings you all health, peace, prosperity, and more happiness than you can handle :D

I'm sorry for the delays in responding to notes and messages, and the rash of fav and runs. What with school,  holiday prep and aftermath I haven't even had the time to change my mind lately. I'm really missing the time creative time and relaxation time I'd been used to having.  I haven't seen my muse in weeks, and I'm sure she's buried somewhere under a pile of school books and covered in stickies

Aside from the lack of time, it's all good though. The hoidays were awesome. I was wonderfully spoiled and even got the very cool surprise of winning a draw at school and coming home with an amazing home theater system!!
The intense focus is paying off too, in a grade average of 96% and half my coursework done in a quarter of the time :D Oh if I'd only been this studious the first time around. Who knows where I'd be by now. Wait....now I'm depressing myself :lmao:

Anyway, I hope everyone's having a fabulous start to the new year, and please be patient with my slow responses.

Much love!

Well, it's been an awesome spring, summer and fall being unemployed, having no schedule to follow, staying up late, and sleeping later :D but, all good things come to an end so it's time to get serious again.

I've been fortunate enough to get government funding to go back to school. 75% of the course paid for, and a living allowance for the next 8 months while I'm in school.

I settled on a legal adminstrative assistant course. Lots of openings in the field here, and tons of opportunity for advancement! It's a HUGE relief to know I'll never have to go back into customer service again

It's going to be a little odd being back in school after so many years, but I'm thinking I'm going to enjoy it a lot more this time around.

At very least....it's going to be an interesting, busy 8 months.

Bear with me if I'm a little slow responding to notes and messages during that time.  I have to study, or someone might ground me

New toys and I hate the Geek Squad!

Thanks to a son dissatisfied with some of the features of our computer, we have some very cool new upgrades. Yay! It started with the Cannon Printer/Photocopier/Scanner/Fax, which took me two days to figure out

Of course once we got to Bestbuy, there was a new game he just had to have. :D So...install the game and then realize that the video card couldn't keep up with it, so back to the store for a new video card, and another gig of ram and...oh yeah, a gorgeous 22" Samsung LCD Widescreen monitor. Here...is where the headache started.

The old one was an onboard card. So...rather than install it ourselves we thought (silly us) that we'd avoid any issues and have the Geek Squad install it for us. Back home to wait,  back to the store to pick it up.  Back home, reconnect everything and voila, the game runs....but wait! NO SOUND, there's software installed that doesn't belong that's eating up cpu like crazy and there are devices missing in the device manager. 2 hours of trying to find the problem and....back to the store the next morning. The tech tells me oh...the missing devices probably have to do with the old card. PROBABLY????? He doesn't know why there's no sound. Back home, 8 hours of waiting, 2 more hours of being on hold, dropped calls, people being paged who don't come to the phone and I finally get the tech again. He matter of factly tells me that that they've spent the day backing up the drive, ran into a problem where the computer wouldn't boot, resolved that issue , but.... does he have my permission to wipe the drive . To fix a hardware issue???? I tell him rather emphatically NO!  Then I ask him, did they try a new sound card?  Well, no, but that will be one of the steps they try tomorrow, the store is closing now. WHY....am I telling a tech to try a new sound card? Should he not know this?

Skip forward to noon the next day....I get a call from the tech. Oh....it was the sound card. We've installed a new one. We won't charge you for the card, but we do have to charge for the install. I tell him I'll talk to the manager about that.

Back to the store, give the manager an earful, don't pay for the install and leave with the computer and assurances that if I get it home and there are issues, they'll be happy to correct them.

Back home, once again reconnect everything and....we have sound, we have video BUT, my virus scan won't load on start up, the new monitor doesn't have the proper screen resolution settings, shortcuts are missing, windows won't recognize my external hard drive and the Pro-Tools Mbox won't work.

DAMN YOU GEEK SQUAD!!! I'll do this myself! 4 hours later, 'lil old me (not a paid professional) has my computer up and running PROPERLY.

My advice to anyone considering using Bestbuy's Geek Squad services....DON'T!!!!

End of rant

Now I'm just too tired to enjoy all the new features and none of my old desktop wallpapers fit! :D

Thanks to the keen eyes and kind consideration of  :iconmadamem:
I've discovered that a set of my brushes is being offered at another website by someone apparently claiming them as their own.

I know this is a problem for many DA artists and stock providers and I'm sure I'm not alone in my frustration and anger. My question is,  WHY do people do this?? I just don't understand the mental dynamics of the offenders. I mean....is there REALLY any satisfaction to be had in claiming you created something that you didn't? I'm definately not above enjoying a pat on the back or a little ego stroking, but I want it to be for something I'VE done!

Anyway, in response to the incident my future brush sets will include a READ ME text clearly outlining my terms of use (which I don't think are unreasonable) .

The text will read :

This brush set is © midnightstouch      midnightstouch.deviantart.com/

Ok

Well.... I hope everyone's enjoying their summer.

Me.... I can't quite decide. It's definately my favorite time of year despite the mosquitos. It's just been a little hard to get out there and enjoy it when it's 95+ degrees...the humidity makes it feel like it's 102...and you're limited to public transportation so you can't get to the beach.  I SO miss having my own car! :(

Now one would think that I'd enjoy being unfettered by a job ...ESPECIALLY in the middle of summer. I definately am NOT missing the daily grind....but...I'm rapidly becoming (oh the horror) BORED!!

Here's hoping the weather gets more reasonable over the next week so I can do a little exploration without risk of melting :D

In the meantime, I'll be posting some new stock photos from my last brief excursion in the next couple of days....And...Keep myself busy working on a new set of brushes.

Take care everyone! :)
