Erasure damn it!!

Sun Nov 8, 2009, 8:11 PM

I'm generally fairly computer literate which is and has been a good
thing given the amount of time I spend on a computer. It's also a good
thing given the number of viruses, trojans, worms and the like that lurk
in the wings waiting for opportunity to infect the home PC.

A couple of weeks ago my PC was bitten by a nasty bug. The H1N1 of
computer viruses. Damned thing kicked my butt! I spent 5 days researching, deleting, wrestling with files that didn't belong and finally admitted defeat. I saved what I could (thank goodness for external hard drives) and reformatted.

I did lose a few things, and in the long run I suppose it's good to have cleaned up and started from scratch however...reinstalling everything I HAD
on this machine has been a daunting task. I never realized just how many
software programs and plugins I had amassed. I've been reloading for two weeks and STILL not quite done.

I certainly don't want to go through this again any time soon!

In the meantime...patience folks I'll get to you all :)

It's a very good thing. There are some things that would have been impossible to get back if they'd been only on the main drive. I'm thankful for that much :)

:) Hopefully you won't run into this problem. It's tedious work
restoring everything to how it was.

Thanks

I have done it so many times for years, I even get paid to fix computers and I still do fix computers; So far I did reject 3 people.. I swear they are nothing more than idiots thinking that I would do the work all for nothing + buy them new whatever the computer needed to be replaced. Hahah Bah-Bye LOL

Thanks Will. It just sucks because there are so many other things I'd rather be doing than reloading. :D

I've heard that Avira is highly effective. In my computer networking class, my group runs that and we have almost no security beyond it (horrible I know but we were trying to make a DOS program talk to Server 2008...madness!)

Anyway, good luck on restoring your computer back to normal! I know I've done that a few times...

Right now I'm trying Avast and researching what some of the other virus protection programs offer.

Thanks! It's such a slow process loading everything back again. :(

Avira has the advantage of being free...except for the ads. But small price to pay right?

Hang in there *patpat*

I do use Firefox because I absolutely HATE Explorer. Definitely checking out different virus protection. I've always used AVG, but I'm running Avast right now until I decide on a permanent replacement.

ahhh there is your problem avg is absolute garbage. A computer is an investment so why not invest in a protection program that has people working on it daily to keep your computer safe :D. I promise you Mcafees is a great program :D. Norton is trash too i used that before and it didn't help at all.

I absolutely HATE Norton. It was installed on this PC when I got it. It's a memory hog and not very good.

I'll probably go with Mcaffee. I REALLY don't want to have to go through this again.

I have had this PC, the one that I am on, not the one I use the most, for about 10 YEars, and still only 5-8 Viruses, Luckily I run Clam Win, Norton 360, Malwarebytes, and Spybot S$D! W00t also, I sold a Mac because I got like 100 viruses in a week. >.>

I've had this PC for 3 years, and the one previous for 10. I've had run ins with viruses before, not many but the few that I've had I've always been able to eradicate them. This one was just plain ugly though. It messed with a lot of system settings and every time I got rid of one infected file, another would show up. It's all good now though. It's just taking some time to add all the programs I used to have!

Get yourself an Apple Mac.....they don't get viruses because of the operating system....they are also a dream because they are much faster, much better at processing, just much better.....and no....I don't work for Apple.....I just have lots of bad experience with PC's and now have a Mac!!!!

 Bill Gates will have you shot for saying that :D

I plan on getting a Mac in the next year. Our entire office runs on Macs so I've gotten pretty comfortable using them. They're much better for any kind of graphics work too :D

Bill Gates should be the one to be shot.......Someone once said: "if you are a parent and you buy your child a PC its a form of child abuse" and I agree with them, and as an adult if you buy yourself a PC its self abuse!!
